The CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprise Initiative (CVSEI) strengthens the capacity of California nonprofits to fundamentally leverage volunteers and their skills to address community needs while building a sustainable revenue model for volunteer centers. The CVSEI utilizes a comprehensive research-backed assessment, training, consulting and certification model allowing nonprofits to realize higher programmatic impact and generate greater operational effectiveness by leveraging the time and talent of volunteers to expand their program operations and revenues. Local volunteer centers provide the program training, consulting, and technical assistance necessary to support the transformation to Service Enterprise.

What is a Service Enterprise?
A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills across all leadership levels in all departments to successfully deliver on the social mission of the organization. Less than 15% of organizations nationwide can be characterized as Service Enterprises, but in a study on Service Enterprises conducted by the TCC Group, researchers found that those organizations that engage volunteers are equally as effective as their peers without volunteers yet operate at almost half the average annual budget. For every $1 invested in effective volunteer engagement, nonprofits can expect up to $6 in return through more effective program delivery which represents a 600% return on investment. When organizations engage and manage any number of volunteers well, they are significantly better led and managed than organizations that do not engage volunteers and/or do not manage them well.
Service Enterprises are not only better led and managed, they are significantly more adaptable, sustainable and capable of going to scale. To be a Service Enterprise requires strong and well developed human resource management practices. Critical, pro bono research conducted by Deloitte identified eight characteristics as consistent and critical practices for nonprofit Service Enterprises, including executive buy-in and clear on-boarding and expectation setting with volunteers.
The CVSEI helps nonprofits develop these characteristics and practices into their organizational structure and culture. As nonprofits continue to face an environment of doing more with less, the most successful organizations excel in volunteer engagement practices that lead to greater organizational capacity and community impact. By achieving the level of excellence reflected in Service Enterprise certification, organizations are uniquely positioned to leverage their volunteers’ time and talent to expand their program operations and revenues to realize higher programmatic impact and generate greater operational effectiveness.
The CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprise Initiative
The CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprise Initiative (CVSEI) offers service and research-based volunteer management strategies to transform California nonprofits into certified Service Enterprises. Local volunteer centers trained in the latest methods of capacity building through volunteer engagement work with organizations to strengthen their volunteer engagement practices, allowing them to meet even more community needs. Participants have access to an organizational readiness assessment, as well as training and consulting leading to certification as Service Enterprises.
Participating nonprofits have access to:
- A thorough research-backed assessment of existing organizational volunteer engagement practices called the Service Enterprise Diagnostic (SED).
- Up to 16 hours of training to assist in reimagining the ways in which the organization engages volunteers.
- Individualized consulting to address unique organizational opportunities and challenges.
- State and nationwide certification that signifies the organization’s commitment to appropriately leverage the time and talent of volunteers to meet the social mission of the organization.
The CVSEI is not solely volunteer management training but a whole organizational realignment which empowers nonprofits to more efficiently engage volunteers and effectively address community needs. By achieving this level of excellence, organizations will be uniquely positioned to leverage the time and talent of volunteers to expand program operations and revenues, allowing the organization to realize higher programmatic impact and generate greater operational effectiveness.
