Grant Description

CaliforniaVolunteers (CV), the State Service Commission for California, is now accepting applications for 2019-2020 AmeriCorps State funding. Successful applicants receive federal funds and an allotment of full-time or part-time AmeriCorps member positions to help address community problems through service and volunteer action.

AmeriCorps members dedicate a year of their life to intensive community service in exchange for a modest living stipend and Segal Education Award.  The experience often leads to a life enriched by meaningful service and in many cases, a career in the non-profit sector or public service.

AmeriCorps programs address critical community needs including education, disaster services, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans and military families. Sample member activities include tutoring and mentoring youth, job training/placement, home visitation, response to local disasters, restoring natural habitats, organizational capacity building, and supporting and connecting high-need populations to critical services and resources. AmeriCorps members also mobilize community volunteers and strengthen the capacity of the organizations where they serve.

Eligible Applicants

Nonprofit organizations and state and local government agencies are eligible to apply. All applicants must have active registration with the System for Award Management (SAM) at to www.SAM.gov.

Estimated Funds Available

Approximately $7 million in formula funds are available through the state for this competition.  Based on the quantity and quality of grant applications received, CV has the ability to secure an additional $10-15 million through national competitive funds.  A minimum of 24% cash and/or in-kind match is required for new applicants.  The median grant amount awarded in 2018 was $473,184, supporting 34.5 full-time equivalent member positions.

Allowable Expenses

Grants are solely for program expenses such as staffing, training, travel, supplies, member stipend, background checks, data collection, evaluation, etc. and cannot be used for general organizational operating expenses. AmeriCorps members or grant funds can help meet unmet needs or can expand an organization’s ability to better address community needs, but cannot be used to duplicate, displace or supplant resources that already exist in a community.

Notice of Intent

Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a Notice of Intent to Apply for this competition, but it is not required. Notices of Intent to Apply should be completed by Monday, November 5, 2018. You can access to Notice of Intent to Apply here.
