Celebrate Cesar Chavez Day 2007 – Saturday, March 31

Photo of Cesar ChavezCaliforniaVolunteers is proud to partner with Youth Service California, the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, and KaBOOM!, to support activities that honor the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez as part of the annual state holiday. These activities include:

Afterschool service clubs in Title I middle schools across the state. (Grant funds are still available!)

Playground builds in 10 low-income communities throughout the state. (Volunteer to help!)

Posters and bookmarks to help promote Cesar Chavez Day.

Curriculum and teacher training to support the inclusion of Chavez-related content into lesson and activity plans. (Coming soon!)

California Leaders Honored for Support of National Service

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Representative Doris Matsui were both recently honored for their support of national service at at the Friends of National Service Awards Reception held February 13 in Washington DC. Co-hosted by Voices for National Service and the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, the event honored leaders throughout the nation who have worked to protect and expand national service opportunities.

Governor Schwarzenegger was honored with the Outstanding National Service Advocacy Award in recognition of his efforts to make national service both a federal and state priority. Representative Matsui was honored with the Outstanding New Member Award for elevating national service as a first term legislative priority. Matsui currently serves as co-chair of the National Service Caucus.

Other event honorees included Jean Case (wife of AOL Founder Steve Case, The Case Foundation); Senator John McCain (R-AZ); Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY); Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO); Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS); Governor Ed Rendell (D-PA); and, Governor Haley Barbour (R-MS).

Citizen Preparedness Grants Available

Picture of volunteersCaliforniaVolunteers is pleased to announce the availability of $1 million in grant funds to support the development and sharing of innovative practices in Citizen Preparedness and Participation that showcase the use of volunteers in all phases of emergency management. Grant funds will be awarded to projects that demonstrate the potential to significantly increase individual, family, and community preparedness and participation across the state. Projects should address local hazards, priorities, and needs.

Eligible applicants include local government, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations, Citizen Corps Councils and affiliated programs, as well as national service programs.

Applications are due Friday, March 16.

AmeriCorps Week – May 13-20

Getting Things Done logoThe first-ever AmeriCorps Week will be celebrated this spring – May 13-20 in communities throughout the country. Sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps Week is a week-long, nationwide event designed to bring more Americans into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their powerful impact, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible.
