Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. 1915-2011

Photo of Sargent ShriverPeace Corps founder Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. died on January 18, 2011 at the age of 95. Below is a statement about the life and legacy of Mr. Shriver released by Secretary of Service and Volunteering, Karen Baker.

“Robert Sargent Shriver, Jr. was an unrivaled pioneer in the service movement whose leadership and spirit inspired an entire generation to reach for their full potential. Sargent Shriver waged a tireless crusade to make service and compassion the bedrock of an entire nation. The creation of the Peace Corps and Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) are a testament to his voracious thirst for service; the creation of the Special Olympics and Project Head Start are a testament to his unwavering role on the frontlines against injustice and inequality. He was a leader, a visionary, an idealist and a dedicated public servant whose legacy will live on through the indelible institutions he created.”

CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprise Initiative

CaliforniaVolunteers logoCaliforniaVolunteers is preparing to launch the 3-year CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprise Initiative (CVSEI). This program, through partnerships with local volunteer centers, pro bono business employees and contracted partners, will develop curriculum and programming leading to outcomes-based training and systemic realignment of volunteer engagement practices for an estimated 350 critical California nonprofits in the first 3 years of this project, and eventually thousands more.

By engaging senior nonprofit leadership (EDs, board, program and volunteer managers) in 4-6 month volunteer management system redesign activities, participants in this program will realize whole-organization volunteer readiness and receive certification as CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprises. By achieving this standard, nonprofits will be in a position to highlight their volunteer readiness to potential volunteers, funders, businesses and community partners while realizing greater investment of volunteer talent, higher programmatic impact and greater operational efficiencies.

The CVSEI will also strengthen the capacity of local volunteer centers to manage highly skilled volunteers to strengthen their programs and operations, as the volunteer centers themselves will serve as the first pilot group to complete CVSEI curriculum. As a result, the volunteer centers will be held up as CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprise models in their communities, demonstrating the best practices they will be teaching to their partner nonprofits.

Transfer of this Service Enterprise curriculum to the volunteer centers will begin in year 2 of this initiative, when the volunteer centers will begin delivering CVSEI curriculum in their local communities. By the end of year 3 the curriculum will be fully managed by local volunteer centers and will serve as a proven revenue-generating program for the long-term.

The first year of the CVSEI is being funded by a federal Volunteer Generation Fund Grant of $400,000. The Volunteer Generation Fund, a program authorized by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, is designed to increase the number of people who serve in meaningful roles as volunteers dedicated to addressing important needs in communities across America. Private businesses are providing required match funding as well as pro bono support.

AmeriCorps NCCC Can Help Your Organization

AmeriCorps NCCC logoCould your organization use a team of hardworking young people dedicated to improving communities like yours?

The mission of AmeriCorps NCCC is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through team-based national and community service. NCCC deploys teams of 9 -12 members to serve on service projects lasting an average of 6-8 weeks. There is no direct fiscal requirement to host AmeriCorps NCCC teams – AmeriCorps NCCC is not a fee-for-service program nor do they require any type of matching funds.

Who can apply?
Non-profits—secular and faith based, local municipalities, state governments, federal government, National or state parks, indian tribes, schools

Examples of past projects range from construction of low-income housing to flood response and other disaster-related projects.

CaliforniaVolunteers’ Disaster Volunteer Resource Inventory (DVRI) Beta Test

Disaster Corps logoThe DVRI is an online volunteer management tool, free to any volunteer program involved in disaster or emergency management. Potential users include volunteer programs sponsored by local government, community- and faith-based organizations and the private sector. When populated, the DVRI will provide both a statewide and local view of public, private, and nonprofit volunteer resources, making it faster and more efficient to locate the needed volunteer resources.

In November and December of 2010, CaliforniaVolunteers showed the latest version of the DVRI to over 300 stakeholders during a series of webinars and workshops. Currently, CaliforniaVolunteers is implementing a few key additions to the DVRI, scheduled to be completed mid February, 2011. CaliforniaVolunteers will then conduct a beta test of the system with select programs followed by a full rollout tentatively near the end of March.
