Chris Ashley, UniverSOUL Cafe

Saving the Planet, One Meal at a Time

A high school senior and a Youth Jobs Corps member with UniverSOUL Café, Chris Ashley is grateful to be part of a team that is learning what it takes to be the best workers, leaders and entrepreneurs while helping the planet. UniverSOUL Café is a Sacramento-based non-profit which opened a culinary youth kitchen to help address food insecurity in the area.

In his second year as a peer manager with UniverSOUL Café, Chris enjoys being in a leadership role because it has provided him with the opportunity to help his peers feel more confident and ready to enter the world of culinary work. Through his experience, Chris has gained a wealth of knowledge about food such as how much is wasted, how to recover food safely, and how to dispose of it properly.

“We can go anywhere now and feel like we can help save the planet, one meal at a time,” said Chris. Excited to graduate from high school in May, Chris continues to work towards accomplishing his goal to open his own restaurant.
