Using a Lifetime of Experience to Help Shape Future Generations

Hester Schneekloth

Currently serving a third term with AmeriCorps California, retired preschool teacher and first-time grandmother Hester Schneekloth continues to live out her passion to make a difference in the lives of little ones. With over 40 years of experience working in early childhood development, Hester uses her wealth of knowledge to tutor students through the Early Learning Corps program.

What life experiences inspired you to serve as an AmeriCorps California member?

As a retired preschool teacher, I thoroughly enjoy working with students and have done so for over 40 years. My background in early childhood development started when I was 18 years old. I tried working other jobs, but in the end, I didn’t feel I was making a difference. I love what I do through this program and know that I can keep making a difference in the lives of children.

What has been a highlight moment in your service experience so far? Why?

Last year, I had a set of twins who had come in with no previous schooling experience and limited opportunities to socialize with others. I worked with them for months and saw growth in their personalities and social skills as time went on until things finally clicked. The look on their faces and their smiles, after they realized what they could achieve! It forever imprinted in my brain.

What existing professional skills have you applied in your role and/or what skills have you learned so far? How have your skills impacted your service site?

I know how to have good rapport with students. It’s important to know how to communicate with students to build connection and trust to work together. Essentially, you learn how they learn, and it is a cohesive learning experience. If you don’t have that rapport before the learning starts, you don’t get the learning.

What advice would you give to someone who is 55+ and is looking for an opportunity to get involved in the community but isn’t sure what steps to take?

Do it! Join AmeriCorps California! All the programs! It’s a great program and it’s needed in all communities.
